William Morris (1834-1896) was an English artist, textile designer, and writer associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the English Arts and Crafts Movement. He was a preeminent designer during his time, but also wrote and published many incredible works of poetry, non-fiction, and fiction. Some of his most enduring works are his fantasies, which helped pave the way for the modern fantasy genre. In keeping with the spirit of the Pre-Raphaelites, Morris considered his fantasies a revival of the medieval tradition of chivalrous romances – while his archaic language can be challenging, the beautiful and ethereal effect it produces is well worth the effort. Morris greatly influenced many great creatives, including J.R.R. Tolkien, who purchased and treasured a complete set of Morris’s works.
