Christopher Morley (May 5, 1890 – March 28, 1957) was an American journalist, novelist, essayist, and poet. A true lover of literature, he was author of more than 100 novels, books of essays, and volumes of poetry, but is probably best known today for his first two novels, Parnassus on Wheels (1917) and The Haunted Bookshop (1919). Morley’s last message to his friends and family before his death was this: “Read, every day, something no one else is reading. Think, every day, something no one else is thinking. Do, every day, something no one else would be silly enough to do. It is bad for the mind to continually be part of unanimity.”
From the back:
“Haunted by the ghosts of the books I haven’t read. Poor uneasy spirits, they walk and walk around me. There’s only one way to lay the ghost of a book, and that is to read it.”
Roger Mifflin, self-declared “bibliotherapist” (the practice of healing minds with books the way doctors heal bodies with medicine), notices that a book has gone missing from his bookstore. The ensuing investigation leads him on the chase of his life.
This 1919 bibliomystery is a charming ode to books and the art of bookselling, wrapped inside a suspenseful thriller. In this novel, Christopher Morley, through the voice of Roger Mifflin, points out the importance of literature, and how much knowledge and wisdom can be gained if we only were to read more books. A must-read for all book lovers.
