One could certainly say that Lewis was at the peak of hopelessness in 1919 when this book of poems was published. In this volume, we see a heart-wrenching picture of what life without Christ does to the human soul. We see a hopeless, roving man, buried under the weight of his eternal insignificance.
Reading this book of poems alongside Lewis’s other works provides us with a brilliant contrast between the life of one walking in the Light versus the life of one walking in darkness.
