My Newest Illustrated Classic: Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
I am so excited to announce my newest illustrated book Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, available for pre-order on October 1st.
October. The beginning of Spooky season. In my opinion, the best way to celebrate Autumn is to read gothic tales of thwarted romance…Wuthering Heights fits the bill perfectly!
Now I am well aware of the controversy surrounding this book. Many people loathe it the way that Heathcliff loathes Linton. The characters are all abominable, there is little to no redemption in the end, and the feelings between Cathy and Heathcliff is a terrible example of love. I GET IT; I AGREE WITH ALL OF THE ABOVE. However, these are all of the reasons why I love this book!
Just because a story is depressing does not mean it is bad. There is much to be learned from a tale replete with woe. This quote from Franz Kafka mirrors my thoughts completely: “I think we ought to read only the kind of books that wound or stab us. If the book we’re reading doesn’t wake us up with a blow to the head, what are we reading for? So that it will make us happy, as you write? Good Lord, we would be happy precisely if we had no books, and the kind of books that make us happy are the kind we could write ourselves if we had to. But we need books that affect us like a disaster, that grieve us deeply, like the death of someone we loved more than ourselves, like being banished into forests far from everyone, like a suicide. A book must be the axe for the frozen sea within us. That is my belief.”
In these pages, we learn what love is NOT. We learn how NOT to treat the people who inhabit our lives. We learn to have empathy for those in situations much worse than our own. Not to mention, it is just a highly entertaining read!
If you don’t know anything about the Bronte sisters, I highly recommend doing a deep delve into their histories. FASCINATING women, all three of them. Learning about the lives they led provides more context to the stories that they wrote.
This beautiful hardcover edition of Wuthering Heights features original cover art and several full color illustrations on the inner pages. It is complete and unabridged. The book will be available exclusively on my website, and will open for pre-order starting on October 1st at 10am CST. All pre-ordered books will receive a free bookplate.
From the back:
“Be with me always – take any form – only do not leave me here in this abyss, where I cannot find you!”
Upon the bleak Yorkshire moors sits Wuthering Heights, an estate that mirrors that wildness and torment of its inhabitants. Savage foundling Heathcliff falls madly in love with his benefactor’s daughter, Cathy, and she with him. But their longing for each other is thwarted not only by social position, but by their own narcissism and volatility.
A book about the weight of choice and the potency of regret, it is filled with an uncanny understanding of the nature of humanity. Emily Bronte shocked readers when the book was first published in 1848 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell.
This edition has been lovingly brought to life with original illustrations by Haleigh DeRocher.
